Cruising with the Chicago Architecture Foundation down Chicago River is an opportunity that should not be missed. If you’re new to the city or have lived here for years, you’re sure to see the city in a new way.
I have a confession. I have lived in and around the Chicago area for a very large part of my life, give of take a few years. I had always heard the Chicago Architecture Foundation boat tour was “the best thing you can do In Chicago” (my husband’s words) but it wasn’t until recently that I actually decided to go.
My best friend was in town, and thanks to my WBEZ membership, I had two free tickets. So it seemed like the perfect time and thankfully, it was the perfect day as well. The sun was shining and we enjoyed our 90 minute tour on the top deck. Our tour guide knew every detail and I don’t think she stopped sharing the entire ride.
I can safely say, that I agree with my husband. If weather permits, the architecture boat tour is one of the best ways to explore the city. Here’s a few reasons why:
1. Learn It All
I had thought I knew all there was to know about downtown. I was completely wrong! The tour guide showed us the smallest of details on these large buildings, and what they meant to Chicago architecture.
2. See The City In A New Way
This wasn’t my first time boating in the Chicago River, but I don’t think I had ever taken the time to sit and listen, and really view these buildings. I was surprised at how much I saw in a way I had never seen before.
3. Understand More About Chicago’s Rich History
Chicago architecture isn’t just about the buildings. These buildings all have stories that can be shared about what was occurring at that moment in time. In 90 minutes, I learned more about Chicago’s history than I ever had before, thanks to these buildings.
4. Enjoy A Drink On The River
Pro Tip: There’s a bar aboard the boat! Did not find that out until I was leaving. But, I can only imagine how great it would’ve been to cruise with a glass of wine in my hand.
Tickets start around $40. Turn it into a date night and go for a twilight cruise with your sweetheart!
